Today is the 16th anniversary of the Hillsborough Disaster. My thoughts go out to the families of the 96, those injured in the disaster and those others that suffer to this day.

You will never be forgotten and you will never, ever, walk alone.

I have a bad case of Liverpoolitis.

Half Turkish, half Arabic, I grew up in the United Arab Emirates. One day, when I was a wee 5 year-old, my mom put a copy of Shoot! on my bed. Kevin Keegan was on the cover. I asked my uncle who he was. "Kevin Keegan? He's the best player in the world, and he plays for Liverpool," he said. My eyes widened. I looked back at the cover. I was hooked.

I got some gear and kept reading Shoot out in Abu Dhabi, and then expanded to Match. I watched us on tv whenever I could. I memorized statistics, decorated my wall with posters, mail-ordered scarves, flags, pennants, shirts, shorts, bedding, curtains, towels and piggie-banks with Liverpool emblazoned all over them. I played footy growing up, and imagined I was Ian Rush, Kenny Dalglish, Phil Neal. I never missed a game - if it wasn't televised, I'd try and catch it on the radio, if I couldn't get it on the radio, I'd wait for it, wait for it, wait for it, and hear the result on the Beeb.

Watched my first televised game in 1979/1980, went to my first live game in 1985. I've seen us on television, radio, the internet, I've seen us in bars, homes, pubs, cafes, discos, airports, live, recorded, delayed, in the First Division, the Premiership, Charity Shield, European tournaments, friendlies, finals, semi-finals, in black and white, color, high definition, playing in Red, White, Cream, Green, Black, Yellow, against teams from France, Italy, Spain, England, Scotland, Germany, Turkey, Portugal, Eastern Europe, home, away, neutral, commentating in English, American, Arabic, Turkish, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Chinese, kicking off local time at 6am, 7.30am, 10am, 11am, 12pm, 3pm, 5pm, 8.30pm, 10pm, 11.45pm and 1am ...sorry if I missed anything, but you get it.

In 1984, I watched that penalty shootout probably a thousand times on my Betamax. I still have it.

In 1985, I was hurt, afraid, upset, and shattered as a kid. I cried for my fellow fans.

In 1989, I cried again, as a teenager, and couldn't watch football for weeks. I cried for my fellow fans again.

Michael Thomas cost me a television. I never agreed with signing the player that I wanted to rip to shreds. I never cheered for him. Ever.

I soon moved to the US; to a cold mountaintop village with no footy coverage at all. The internet wasn't around in its current format, television stations showed lumberjack competitions misnamed "Sports", and my shortwave was back in the Emirates.

Robbie Fowler awoke me from my only Liverpool-break. The internet appeared, the Irish followed with Setanta in pubs, and Liverpool came flooding back to my arms. From 1992 until 1995, I saw no games at all, only results. I found a seedy pub to watch my first game in 3 years - the FA Cup final, I bid adieu to my childhood hero amidst the hurt of losing to a United team I had never watched either. I saw the suits. I didn't understand it. Had *my* game changed??

I didn't like the Evans era overall, but I loved Macca, Collymore, and Fowler. Houllier gave me hope, especially in the treble year, but I called for his head after last season.

Now about this subject of foreign fans - thanks for this thread. I respect Dunk tremendously for his post the other day about the foreign fan thing, and you guys for pitching in also.

I've had fans call me names. I've had them tell me I wasn't a real fan. They've made fun of the fact that I support a team whose stadium is in another country. I've been told to '[censored] off back to arabia' by a kid in a Redknapp jersey in an American pub *just after we had lifted the UEFA cup*.

We are all fans. We bleed Red, we are miserable after a loss and ecstatic after a victory, we take it out on our friends and family, who love us after a victory and avoid us after a loss.

We support this club. It's ours, all of ours, it belongs to all of us, INCLUSIVELY. It's not just your team. It's always beena royal pain in the arse to follow a team across 12 time zones and 5 languages, but I do it, and have been doing it, without having been to Anfield, for *25 years*.

You know why? I love this team.

Rants & Sessions

It is Wednesday afternoon and i am itching to get my butt out to be free like a bird to do whatever i want than to stuck on this chair in the cold office with submission datelines to keep up with.

Backtrack to Saturday 14th Feb 2004, it was Sessions with Trance Republic, @ Phuture. It was a success and a happy night for most judging from the turnout and crowd response. Take a read and see what the rest have to say for the night. If you had a look at the tracklist for my hour, it is filled with vocals and old skool trance. Not what i had in mind to play which was to be melodic & euphoric, uk style. I could see some regular trance fans and friends wasn't dancing but chatting away before i took over and there were quite a few group of ladies around, surprising it is Valentines Day. So I decided that it would be nice to go vocal.

Well, yes no one would actually play everything vocal in a club, you will only hear them on cds or vocal mixes, heh to hell with that, lets try it. Glad it went down well with lotsa hands up in the air, sweaty bodies and smiling faces. I had quite a bit of drink before i went up so therefore i just had fun up there. I wasn't too pleased with my mixing thou, perhaps its not my day but i swear it sounded alright in the cans before i released them, hahaha nonetheless, it was the choons that did the night for us. Some critics may say it is cheese but it is trance and if you like trance, you will favour the night as everything trance was played.

Felix aka Hooj and Brandon did wonderfully too thou i was wondering in and outta Phuture to Zouk to know more, and hell i had too much to drink that night, was trying hard to sober up at the end of the night, head was so god damn heavy, i think i had at least 10 different type of alcholic drinks before my body reacted, i think i am slowly getting the feel of it back.

Tony took over promptly at 3am and wasted no time with prog and nu skool breakz choons that is popular among trancers, i urged him to throw in as the breaks come and he did and also gave him dk8 - murder was the bass to play, phat tune!
Then after the lights came on, the folks went off fast, to home and over to Zouk while i finished up my bottle of Stout.

Our photographers took hundred of pictures, they are still being sorted out, will post up the link once review and pics are up on our site. Now you have got serveral remixes to choose from.
Armin's Rising Star Dub Mix
Armin's Rising Star Vocal Mix
Ronski Speed Dub Mix
Ronski Speed Remix
Kyau vs Alberth Remix

What else can i say about this tune? The Armin's rising star vocal mix has to be the tune for me this moment. IT'S DOPE!!! The Vocal Melts your Skin! Seriously, this tune has to be the tune to be heard in Singapore right now, not sure if PvD will play it, nor matt darey but fucking hell, i will play it the next time i get up there!

Best way to enjoy this tune is to feel the vocals and allow hair on your skin to stand and sense the love and desire in it...

LISTEN !

Armin van Buuren featuring Justine Suissa - Burned with Desire (Armin's Rising Star Vocal Mix)

For each forgotten kiss
For all the memories
For all the times alone
Said all we had to say

You played your part so well
A modern Romeo
You came on Cupid's wings
And then you flew away

When you touch my face
When you call my name
I'm burned with desire

When you touch my face
When you call my name
I'm burned with desire
But you left me in the rain

For every sleepless night
Forever in your arms
For every hour spent
Lost in the revery

You broke your promises
No shame and no regrets
You burned the bridges too
An endless mystery

When you touch my face
So beautiful
When you call my name
My name..
I'm burned with desire

When you touch my face
So beautiful
When you call my name
My name..
I'm burned with desire
But you left me in the rain

When you touch my face
So beautiful
When you call my name
My name..
I'm burned with desire

When you touch my face
When you call my name
I'm burned with desire
But you left me in the rain.

ps: burned yet? tell me what do you think about this tune.

Localized @ Zouk ... afterthoughts

Saturday 10th Jan 2004

Home:
I havent actually been putting in a lot of hours preparing for my hour in Zouk, at most i think i had like 6-7hours for the past 2 weeks. I knew my tracks yes but then again i was contemplating on what exactly to play.

Zouk:
Had the sound check done around 7pm+, first impression was the whole console is so comfortable for me to be in, the height of the decks and mixer as just nice for me. Was a little worried about using the Rotary Rane Mixer thou.

Dinner:
Zion Road market with Andrew Tang and we chatted a good bit on music and one's style. Meanwhile, tons of smses came in and went out, been happening since afternoon.

Zouk:
Band's started late and they came on at 2215hrs. Was expecting heavier and faster music but they were a little slow on the vocals and it sounded kinda bored to me. The bands winded up their performance at 2330hrs and Ming aka Decksurgeon came on with his signature new york housy sound. Supporters of the band left the dancefloor leaving room for the clubbers to come in, but it was only about 1/4 filled with grooving bodies. I was telling myself that the crowd better start coming in. The place did started to fill up in a slow pace. Andrew Tang took over at around 0010hrs and started his unique tribal sound known to him, still sound very new yorky heh. By then the crowd had slowly accumulated and its pretty decent and still packing in slowly. I WAS Totally sober still so i went around talking to friends and took some drinks along the way. The time is creeping near, well it's a fact i cannnot deny that i need something stronger to calm my nerves. Got myself a Guiness and went into the console and sorted out some tunes. I think that guiness helps a lot, haha i was still grapping on the metal chair inside the console tightly when i tried to relaxed.

Finally took over at about 115hrs, as i plug the cans in and look at the crowd, i realised that it was fucking packed and it was an eager and responsive crowd, then my mind went blank! haha kiddin... decided to give them one big one if the tune matches, and there u go Motocycle - As The Rush Comes (Armin van Buuren Remix). Trancers started to recgonize the tune as it comes in and the response was crazy, you can see the lights shining on them and everyone was smiling and seemingly enjoying themselves. That's a BIG TUNE for you, i was telling them silently. Had to pitched up ATRC as it was way too slow at -1.5, haha i think some of them heard it when it went faster after the breakdown. Once again, the feeling up there is nothing i have experienced before. The cheers, vibe and atmosphere of the the dancefloor can be felted up in the booth. I was telling myself, fuck i better not screw up the next hr. I decided to go more tech as that was what i planned to play, a Tech-Trance, Electro Trance and Techno hour.
In came a couple of tech choons and they were up for it, i brought up the pitch and volume to one moment that i think it was a little too fast, had to slow it down.

Somehow i got myself into the vibe and atmosphere and kinda found myself being semi-concious, its like being lost in your own world, lost in the music.
I am there physically but also seem to be floating in another world with my music although i was clear about what is happening out on the dancefloor and in the console. Sensing the mood went down a little, i threw in an uplifting trance anthemn to satisfy some trance fans out there who may not like tech sounds, damn i couldnt play marco v - godd because the tune wont flow in from there then, wanted to see how godd reacts with the crowd actually.

There you go, energy and hands in the air, the sound of trance in Zouk. Was thinking of throwing another trancy one before heading back to tech but i decided to play some techno. However i played the wrong side of Max Walder's tune which i intended to use that to hand over to Gerald. Heck it, doesnt matter since the other side and theres other tech choons i got that is suitable too. The next few tunes were techno and electro and i was glad the crowd also liked them. I think some of them thought i was playing crazily with the effects up there, thou i did a little but some was in the production itself. Threw in a cortez tune to see how it goes, have only heard it once when Agnelli & Nelson dropped it when they came to Spore. 0108hrs, last choon and its full on techno hour. Maybe the pace was set a little too fast for G to take over, had wanted to slow it down a little for him but i forgot, so i left him do his stuff. Sleepwalker did his annoucement and as much as i was glad to hear my name and consortium and the cheers, i think the crowd was happy and satisfied thou i think i can do better on the eqing part of certain transition. Still kinda lost i stepped back and let the techno assault begin!

Had many friends telling me i rocked the house, i was glad i did, i just did according to what i would do anywhere, i played what i would play in the later hours if i am taking a longer set, so thats my style and sound you hear. I love looking at the crowd and entertaining them, so perhaps that helped. It was not over, heh i stayed back and partied a little and finally localized ended at 0440am with Aldrin dropping Unkle - In A State.

Seldom do we see such a night, no foreign djs, all locals and the support we had was marvellous, lasting all the way to almost almost 445am. This looks great and i am sure theres much more local jocks can offer our dance scene.

Got home and couldnt sleep until bloody 7am.

Zzzzzzz

Its over and if anyone of my friends is reading this, my heartfelt thanks to the support given to me and Trance Republic.

To everyone in Zouk, especially Aldrin, Felicia, Tracy, Ester, Jimmy, thank you for believing in me and giving me the opportunity. Will be a day i cherish.

Tracklist: Localized @ Zouk 10th Jan 2004

Motorcycle - As The Rush Comes (Armin van Buuren Remix)
DJ Tiesto - Obession (Frank Biazzi Remix)
Marco V - atlanta 02.02.2002
Marco V - revolt
Marco V - the mutalisk
Saltwater - The Legacy (Alphazone Remix)
Max Walder - Crown
Ferry Corsten - Rock your Body, Rock (F Massif Remix)
Cortez - Scaramanga
Max Walder - Samba del Costa

-end-

Past

Deep Dish @ Zouk, 21st Dec - thou they started off kinda mellow, it went on mighty fine all the way till late! Even heard electro tunes from the duo, a little different this year compared to their last very prog night last year. One signaficant tune that was heard for the night was Dido - Stone (Deep Dish Remix). Crowd was still lapping it up at 430am and it could have gone longer if not for the fact that they got a flight to catch! Ending the night with mixing in Depeche Mode - Behind the Wheel with Unkle - In a State (Sasha Remix), 2 big and wonderful tunes to close the night. I think lotsa clubbers went back happy.

Coming

Carl Cox @ Zouk, 24th Dec for White Christmas. I think i should be heading to hear him, kinda enjoyed his latest album and would be a good night.

Danny Tenagia @ Zouk, 27th Dec with a minimum 6hrs set. Nothing more to say but to hear him warm up and rock the dancefloor DT's style that night. Should be heading down too since i missed hearing him last year because of a function.

NYE, 31st Dec!
Many NYE parties to choose from, Paradise has Steve Lawler & Dave Angel, Essential MOS has Dave Season, Darren Emerson, Leeroy Thornhill, Lisa Loud & Steromovers, The Arena has DJ Leomeo and some sweet female djs at a costly ticket, Liquid has hard and fast john robinson. I think i should either be chilling out with my buddies or check out Sister Bliss.

Satoshi Tomiie @ Zouk,02 Jan 2004. Woohoo another nice groovy nite.

Richie Hawtin @ Zouk,03 Jan 2004. YES! the Plastikman, i last heard him in Taiwan at the now closed(due to substances) TexRound, should be a good night but then again, age is catching up, may have to choose one nite outta both nights.

Next up should be something everyone looking to support local acts should look forward to and will be special to me.
chee soon juan: mr prime minister, where is the money?

a page from chee soon juan's diary. from the old sdfonline.org / singaporedemocrat.org

Life in prison

Chee Soon Juan Nov 14, 02

I shared a tiny cell (6ft by 15 ft) with two other inmates and a toilet bowl, the squatting kind. I ate and slept – at nose level – the entire five weeks beside a latrine. I was fortunate as other cells had four inmates crammed into an even smaller cell. The cell is completely bare except for a small window near the ceiling, which allows natural light into room; an awning covers the window so that one cannot see the sky. The wardens peer into the cell through a tiny slit on the solid metallic door, which entombs the cell.

We’re given a straw mat to sleep on the concrete floor (there are no bunk beds like you see on TV) and a plastic box containing two small blankets, toothbrush and toothpaste, soap, toilet paper, a small pail, a drinking mug, and a face towel. Water is provided during meal times. Because of the heat and humidity, inmates flush the toilets and use their pails to collect extra water for washing, cooling down and even drinking.

There is “yard time” an hour a day for exercise and showers. We’re locked in for the rest of the 23 hours. Breakfast is brought in at about eight, lunch at noon and dinner between 3 and 4 o’clock in the afternoon. The meals are adequate except that by nightfall inmates get hungry because dinner is eaten so early.

I spent a couple of nights in the sick bay when I was ill. The “beds” have no mattresses, just a metal plate with holes throughout on which you tried your best to make yourself comfortable. Our ankles are chained to the bed-post. Some prisoners even had both ankles and a wrist cuffed to the bed-frame.

At night if one needs to answer the call of nature, one is given a small pail to urinate into. With one ankle chained to the bed, it takes some skill (and not a little bit of contortion) to manoeuvre into a position where you could bring the bucket onto the bed and kneel over it to ease yourself.

In prison, minutes seem like hours and hours like days. You long to be free and be with family and friends again. Don’t get me wrong, I am not complaining. I accept willingly the punishment because in doing so, I want to demonstrate the nature of the ruling party in Singapore and seek to help it mend its undemocratic ways.

While I don’t have complaints, I do, however, have major concerns:

Hundreds of prisoners comprising men from China, Thailand, Indonesia, Burma, South Asia, etc. who are caught for overstaying in Singapore after their work visas have expired. I witnessed what seemed like an endless row of new inmates all squatting, head shorn and clutching their straw mats and plastic boxes, waiting to be introduced to their cells.

They all looked bewildered and terrified. Why wouldn’t they? A minimum of three strokes of the rotan awaited them (the number depended on how long they overstayed in the country). Caning in Singapore is a barbaric act where trained personnel (some say the caners are trained exponents of the martial arts) slash a six-foot long, one-inch thick cane, across the hapless victims’ buttocks. The individual’s ankles are strapped onto a heavy, metal frame and they bend forward where their wrists are similarly locked, with only their naked backsides exposed.

I was told by some of the inmates that the screams of the victims after each stroke of the whip makes one lose all appetite for food. The cane breaks skin and draws blood. Doctors are on hand to administer treatment and to assess if the individual can take more punishment. A maximum of 24 strokes is the legal limit and only males below 50 years of age can be whipped.

I shared my first night (inmates are rotated in different cells on a regular basis) with a 45-year-old guy from China. His face turned ashen when he told me of his impending ordeal under the rotan. My heart sank further when he told me that many men in his plight leave their countries out of desperation in search of a livelihood. Many are not aware of mandatory caning rule in Singapore.

Our short conversation ended when he lay back on his mat and stared blankly at the ceiling. I then thought of Michael Fay, the American teenager who was caned by the Singapore government for vandalising (spray-painting) cars. The situation then caused a furore in the United States. It was over one individual. But now, only silence greet the thousands who have been whipped, and continue to be whipped, for their “criminal” acts. The pain is just as excruciating for Fay as it is for these overstayers. The only difference is the colour of their skin.

I also saw a couple of inmates who were imprisoned under the Criminal Law Temporary Provisions Act, a law that empowers the government to detain a suspect when it is unable to secure a conviction in open court. The detention order is signed by the minister and is valid for a period of two years. It is also renewable so that a suspect can be detained indefinitely, much like the Internal Security Act used for the ruling party’s opponents.

“Dr Chee, I want to commit suicide,” one of the detainees whispered to me when I paused outside his cell. “I can’t take it. I don’t know when I am going to be released and I can’t get a trial.” He, like the rest of his fellow criminal law detainees, is kept singly in isolation cells.

If my imprisonment can bring the international spotlight to bear on the economic, social, and political injustice that prevails in Singapore, then every minute that I spent in jail was worth it. If pressure can be brought to bear on the Singapore government by our friends in democratic countries and international organisations, and so doing help us in our struggle for freedom, human rights and democracy, then I would without a moment’s hesitation step into that cell again.

But change must ultimately come from us Singaporeans. And if we, by daring greatly, attempt to restore justice and democracy to our country, our current sacrifices would more than compensate for our future successes. For success will come, it is only a question of when and how.

The scene has undergone some strange mutations over the past few years, but it always returns to where it began... Grooves, Melody and Emotion- without which there would be no dance music scene, and there would be no Solarstone.
